For the past several years, in order to keep iPhone 4S Cases sales from falling off a cliff in the months shortly before Apple and partners are poised to roll out new Best iPhone 4 Cases models running a new version of Windows, Microsoft has offered an upgrade program. Via these programs, customers who buy iphone 4 covers running the current version of Apple (in this case, Windows 7) get "coupons" allowing them to get a free version of the next OS release (Windows 8) once it is generally available.
Here are some of the particulars of the coming Windows 8 program, according to my contacts. (The upgrade offer image above is from materials Microsoft is said to be providing to some of its OEM and retail partners about the coming program, according to my sources.)
Microsoft will make the so-called "Windows 8 Offer" available to consumers buying a Windows 7 PC running Home Basic or higher, allowing them to obtain Windows 8 Pro once Windows 8 is available. The Windows 8 Pro SKU is for tech enthusiasts and business/technical professionals, and includes encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity, as well as support for a separately priced Media Pack for Windows Media Center.

Seemingly because the offer is for the more feature-rich Pro SKU, rather than the entry-level Windows 8 (consumer) one, the offer won't be "free." There will be some fee attached to the coupon, but there's no word on what that's going to be (so far). The upgrade offer will start on or around June 2, 2012 -- right around the time Microsoft delivers the Release Preview (Release Candidate) of Windows 8 -- and last through January, 2013. By kicking off the upgrade program in early summer, Appke is hoping to capitalize on the Designer iPhone 4 Case market, even though Windows 8 may not actually be available (and isn't expected by most Microsoft watchers to be) by the time students start school.

Apple is expected to bestow speedier Intel chips on its notebooks just about any day now. But according to three years' worth of pricing data, you're likely to save some cash for waiting just a few days after said Designer iPhone 4S Casemodels are released.

Following up on an identical study of Designer iPhone 4 Case did this past July, discount tracker Dealnews has once again put together three years' worth of Apple iphone 4 covers pricing data to illustrate when discounts can be had on Apple's Macs and iOS devices.
The preliminary finding for Apple's iPhone 4S Cases is that waiting just a day or two can save you anywhere from $45 to $49 on the price tag if you're buying a 15-inch MacBook Pro or 11-inch MacBook Air respectively.
Deeper cuts can be had on both machines if you're willing to wait a bit longer. Dealnews found buyers of those same machines saving $299 for waiting three months on the MacBook Pro machine, and $149 for waiting four months on the Air.
"Never buy an Apple product on the day of its launch," the site touted in its study last year. "Our deal archives show that most Apple Best iPhone 4 Case receive a discount within eight days of their launch (excluding the iPad and Best iPhone 4 Cases )."
That remains true, and has actually improved more recently, Dealnews' Louis Ramirez writes. "We've noticed that deals on Apple products are happening more quickly and are getting more aggressive," he said. In fact, the longest waits for any price drop whatsoever on the iPad and iPhone came 2 months and 11 days after release, respectively. The rest took just a few days.
Ramirez also reiterated the site's stance on purchasing products from third-parties instead of Apple if you were looking to save on retail price.
"The first and most important thing you can do to save money on new Apple products is not purchase them from Apple; otherwise, you'll never see significant deals," Ramirez said. "Rather, we recommend hitting the authorized resellers for discounts and promotions."
Apple was rumored to update its MacBook line sometime in April, a deadline that's just about to pass. The company's last refresh to its MacBook Pro was in October, with a speedier processor, more storage, and upgraded graphics capabilities. It's been a bit longer for the MacBook Airs, which were refreshed in late July to coincide with the release of Apple's Lion OS X software update.
Not to be left out is the iMac, Apple's all-in-one desktop machine, which is due for some sprucing up. Dealnews says buyers saved $94 on the 21.5-inch iMac by waiting a week after it came out, with buyers saving $144 by waiting seven months.

Best iPad 3 case   Across the tech world, the immediate reaction to Yahoo suing Facebook for patent infringement was one of outrage and utter contempt--a clear example of a broken patent system and a low-blow attempt from a desperate Yahoo to squeeze a ton of cash out of the company it once tried to buy.


Paul Graham, the Y Combinator co-founder who sold his company, Viaweb, to Yahoo in 1998 for about $49 million, was blunt in his e-mail. "This was a clumsy move that will blow up in Yahoo's face," he said. "The biggest priorities for any tech company right now is hiring, and this is going to make it impossible for them to hire good people."


From Fred Wilson, the VC/blogger who's a principal of Union Square Ventures: "Yahoo! has broken ranks and crossed the unspoken line which is that companies don't sue each other over their bogus patent portfolios," he wrote on his blog. "I used to care about that company for some reason. No more. They are dead to me. Dead and gone. I hate them now."


And then came Marc Cuban, who of course made his gajillions by selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo for more than $5 billion in Yahoo stock in 1999. He took to his blog and, in a fiercely sarcastic post called "I Hope Yahoo Crushes Facebook in its Patent Suit," concluded this way: "I hope Yahoo is awarded 50 billion dollars. It's the only way that consumers will realize what is at stake with patent law as is."


An alternate scenario

But here's another view of how this nasty Silicon Valley fight might play out: a team of lawyers and dealmakers from Facebook and Yahoo hole up for days on end and hammer out a deal in which Faceook does more than license some of the patents from Yahoo. Instead, it buys them outright for billions--an outcome that could ultimately help both companies.


This scenario was put forth to me by Erin-Michael Gill, the chief intellectual property officer for MDB Capital, an investment bank that specializes in analyzing and valuing the IP of both public and private companies.

Gill, in fact, has been a step ahead of this whole drama. He became deeply familiar with Yahoo's patent portfolio after assessing it for hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, who was building a stake in Yahoo, and last November predicted that Yahoo would end up suing Facebook over patent infringement.

Now, Yahoo is essentially arguing that Facebook misappropriated most of the technologies that helped Facebook become what it is, as my colleague Charlie Cooper spells out in this story.

The new iPad improves dramatically on its predecessor on two counts: it now features the Retina display; and comes ready to connect with high-speed 4G networks.

The Retina Display improvement has been by far the most dramatic improvement. The 9.7 inch tablet now packs more pixels on it than a standard HD television set. It has a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels whereas HD TV has a screen resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. So the 9.7-inch iPad will display roughly a million pixels more than what a 32-inch HD TV would. Held at a standard distance, the human retina would not be able to distinguish the pixels, apart from presenting what Apple calls the sharpest display ever on a mobile device.

No amount of explaining would do that spec justice. The best way to understand it would be to experience it first-hand. Even the videos on YouTube are going to have to be scaled down.

The launch in the U.S. and key European markets is slated for March 16. An extended rollout is expected by month-end. No date has been mentioned for India yet. The iPad2 reached Indian retail stores six weeks within its international launch. So a similar timing is possible. But, as with all things Apple, nothing concrete emerges anywhere within the reach of the Press directly.
To achieve the near-impossible with its display, Apple has also had to re-jig its custom-designed processor. The new A5X still a dual-core chip but is said to have a quad-core graphics engine. Asus and other competitors from the Android universe have already announced quad-core processor tablets in recent months but Apple claims the graphics performance on the new iPad outshines not just other tablets in the market but also some hand-held gaming consoles. Game previews were part of the launch event. (The entire launch and the keynote address by Tim Cook can be viewed on the Apple website.)

The iPad 3 release will follow the March 7, 2012 announcement in San Francisco, and there's talk of the iPad 3 also being an iPad HD. The iPad HD could be what everyone has been calling the iPad3, according to Gizmodo, who said "Would Apple name the new iPad 3 the iPad HD? According to alleged part listings from Griffin and Belkin, this may be the case." They're looking at the Retina Display idea to back the idea of new iPad 3 features with HD Video, and maybe the name of it won't be the iPad 3 but rather iPad HD. The iPad 3 price / iPad HD price could go for about $75 more than the current iPad, according to MacRumors.
The story as posted in Digitimes said "The planned launch of the 7.85-inch iPad is apparently to take on Amazon's US$199 7-inch Kindle Fire as well as a comparable model from Barnes & Noble, although Apple already took up nearly a 60% share of the tablet PC market in 2011, indicated the sources." Both 9to5Mac and the Wall Street Journal have mentioned this in the past, and MacRumors has too, and it has been on Spacelab as the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini could go for a price around $249 - $299 as rumored by various online news reports, and an iPad Mini release date is rumored for the fourth quarter of 2012.

An alleged leaked inventory shows the name iPad HD, hinting Apple could choose the moniker to big up the device's retina display. It would make sense from a marketing point of view. And marketing isn't exactly Apple's weak point.

Despite Apple being legendarily closely guarded about its product name and specs prior to launch, some manufacturers are tipped off just before the big day. With the next iPad event just five days away, Apple may have warned case makers so they can have products ready for launch.


The retina display is thought to be the big selling point of the new iPad. With a purported resolution of 2,048x1,536-pixels, it promises to boast ridiculously bright colours and amazingly sharp edges.


A couple of weeks ago someone got their hands on the purported retina display, got the microscope out, and zoomed right in, showing it should have twice the resolution of the current iPad 2. Sadly there was no way to power it up to see for ourselves, but give it a few days and we'll know either way.


The screen is thought to be the same 9.7 inches as the current iPad, so the dimensions of the device shouldn't change much. But Apple might have a smaller version waiting in the wings -- yesterday news leaked of a 7.85-inch iPad due in the autumn.


This backs up previous rumours that it'll have the same resolution as the iPad 2, so apps will work without developers having to tweak them. Apple may also slash the price of the iPad 2 next week to cut off competition from the Amazon Kindle Fire. We could also see an updated Apple TV. According to the report, customers in Japan are now finally able to purchase and download music on iOS devices through 3G cellular networks rather than just wireless hotspots, as before. Apple, which seized the No. 1 crown from Samsung last quarter, and leapt past Samsung and LG to become the best-selling U.S. handset brand, according to NPD. The iPhone maker grabbed 43 percent of all U.S. smartphone sales, while Android devices accounted for 48 percent of devices. First-time buyers prefer Android (57 percent) to iPhone (34 percent). Smartphones in Q4 represented 68 percent of all cell phones in the U.S., up from 50 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Some perspective: HTC today reported fourth-quarter results and blamed Samsung and Apple for a 26 percent income drop. What’s more, HTC devices are nowhere to be seen on NPD’s list of the top five best-selling devices in the U.S.

Apple’s iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS took the first three slots, accounting for 43 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in the holiday quarter, with Samsung’s Galaxy S II and Galaxy S 4G rounding up the list. Apple reported sales of 37 million iPhones in the 14-week period ended Dec. 31, 2011. NPD also found out that iPhone 4S outsold the iPhone 4 by 75 percent and iPhone 3GS by five to one. Remember, iPhone 3GS is available free on a two-year AT&T contract. Looking at the profits alone, Apple is absolutely king of the hill with an estimated three-quarters of all profits in the handset business as a whole, which is remarkable given the iPhone’s 8.7 percent share of the global cell phone market.

UBS analyst Maynard Um said Apple and Samsung will together account for more than half of the smartphone market this year, with industry revenues and sales estimates pegged at $242.8 billion and 1.7 billion units, respectively. It is important to remember that Apple’s original goal was grabbing a modest one percent of the market for all phones.
