That remains true, and has actually improved more recently, Dealnews' Louis Ramirez writes. "We've noticed that deals on Apple products are happening more quickly and are getting more aggressive," he said. Ramirez also reiterated the site's stance on purchasing products from third-parties instead of Apple if you were looking to save on retail price.
"The first and most important thing you can do to save money on new Apple products is not purchase them from Apple; otherwise, you'll never see significant deals," Ramirez said. "Rather, we recommend hitting the authorized resellers for discounts and promotions."
Apple was rumored to update its MacBook line sometime in April, a deadline that's just about to pass. The company's last refresh to its MacBook Pro was in October, with a speedier processor, more storage, and upgraded graphics capabilities. It's been a bit longer for the MacBook Airs, which were refreshed in late July to coincide with the release of Apple's Lion OS X software update.
Not to be left out is the iMac, Apple's all-in-one desktop machine, which is due for some sprucing up. Dealnews says buyers saved $94 on the 21.5-inch iMac by waiting a week after it came out, with buyers saving $144 by waiting seven months.

Windows 8 tablets: Not open for business

I think Windows 8 is doomed to failed on the desktop. But, much as I dislike Windows 8 and its Metro interface, I thought it had a chance on the business Best iPhone 4 Cases . Microsoft won't be supporting AD on Windows 8 on ARM (WOA).

Thousands of SXSW attendees with lots of social-media moxie but little to no security savvy were easy prey for a hacker like Kitchen. The interface he was using on his Galaxy Note smartphone showed a long list of BlackBerrys, iPhones, Androids, and laptops that thought they were connecting to the hotel or Starbucks Wi-Fi (which uses the name "attwifi"), but were actually being tricked by Kitchen's WiFi Pineapple. "Nobody has any sense of security here," he said, scrolling through the list of devices connected to his Wi-Fi router.

If he wanted to, Kitchen could do something malicious, like a man-in-the-middle attack, and steal passwords and other data from unwitting victims. But his mission is to educate people by demonstrating what the risks are and not attack them. So his device was programmed to replace every Web page on the Internet with a Nyan Cat.

"When the device is kicked off it tries to get back on the network, and since I'm in closer proximity than the Wi-Fi router, it picks up my signal instead," Kitchen said. "In the demo I had half the audience connected to my Wi-Fi router."

Basically, his WiFi Pineapple is what is known as a "Hot-spot Honeypot" that attracts the devices looking to connect to Wi-Fi. The devices send out probe requests when the user turns the Wi-Fi on or turns on the device, and then Wi-Fi is automatically enabled. The messages are asking for a connection from a list of Wi-Fi networks that the device has remembered. Kitchen's router pretends to be the Wi-Fi network the user's device is seeking. This only works with an open Wi-Fi network, not one that's protected with the WPA encryption standard, which requires users to type in a password to connect. "It's an inherent flaw in the trust model of open Wi-Fi," he said.

Prototype software on his laptop was doing something similar with Wi-Fi connections, only the messages it was sending were de-authorization packets to interfere with the current Wi-Fi connection by saying the security equivalent of "this is not the Wi-Fi router you are looking for."
The problem is that the devices are set to automatically remember networks they've connected to in the past and it reconnects automatically when in range. "The security is in the way vendors implement it and all they care about is network name," Kitchen said. The solution would be requiring a challenge and response protocol for authentication and encryption, he said. But the mobile device makers haven't implemented that, probably because users would need to make a few more clicks to get on the network, he added.Best iPad 3 case

The new iPad improves dramatically on its predecessor on two counts: it now features the Retina display; and comes ready to connect with high-speed 4G networks.

The Retina Display improvement has been by far the most dramatic improvement. The 9.7 inch tablet now packs more pixels on it than a standard HD television set. It has a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels whereas HD TV has a screen resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. So the 9.7-inch iPad will display roughly a million pixels more than what a 32-inch HD TV would. Held at a standard distance, the human retina would not be able to distinguish the pixels, apart from presenting what Apple calls the sharpest display ever on a mobile device.

No amount of explaining would do that spec justice. The best way to understand it would be to experience it first-hand. Even the videos on YouTube are going to have to be scaled down.

The launch in the U.S. and key European markets is slated for March 16. An extended rollout is expected by month-end. No date has been mentioned for India yet. The iPad2 reached Indian retail stores six weeks within its international launch. So a similar timing is possible. But, as with all things Apple, nothing concrete emerges anywhere within the reach of the Press directly.
To achieve the near-impossible with its display, Apple has also had to re-jig its custom-designed processor. The new A5X still a dual-core chip but is said to have a quad-core graphics engine. Asus and other competitors from the Android universe have already announced quad-core processor tablets in recent months but Apple claims the graphics performance on the new iPad outshines not just other tablets in the market but also some hand-held gaming consoles. An alleged leaked inventory shows the name iPad HD, hinting Apple could choose the moniker to big up the device's retina display. It would make sense from a marketing point of view. And marketing isn't exactly Apple's weak point.

Despite Apple being legendarily closely guarded about its product name and specs prior to launch, some manufacturers are tipped off just before the big day. With the next iPad event just five days away, Apple may have warned case makers so they can have products ready for launch.

The retina display is thought to be the big selling point of the new iPad. With a purported resolution of 2,048x1,536-pixels, it promises to boast ridiculously bright colours and amazingly sharp edges.

A couple of weeks ago someone got their hands on the purported retina display, got the microscope out, and zoomed right in, showing it should have twice the resolution of the current iPad 2. Sadly there was no way to power it up to see for ourselves, but give it a few days and we'll know either way.

The screen is thought to be the same 9.7 inches as the current iPad, so the dimensions of the device shouldn't change much. But Apple might have a smaller version waiting in the wings -- yesterday news leaked of a 7.85-inch iPad due in the autumn.

This backs up previous rumours that it'll have the same resolution as the iPad 2, so apps will work without developers having to tweak them. Apple may also slash the price of the iPad 2 next week to cut off competition from the Amazon Kindle Fire. We could also see an updated Apple TV. Just not the one we all want to see, unfortunately. The HTC Titan II comes with a whopping 4.7-inch screen, which takes it well past the Nokia Lumia 900′s 4.3-inch display. Of course, the Lumia 900′s screen is based on lovely AMOLED technology, while the Titan II's is S-LCD - the cheaper, inferior alternative.
Another negative point is the resolution, which - like the Lumia 900 - is stuck at 800 x 480. Admittedly that's a limitation of the Windows Phone OS, but it will look a whole lot grainier on the Titan II's large display. How can we be so certain? Well, we've seen this before - but more on that later.
1.5GHz processor
As is the norm for second generation Windows Phone 7 devices, the HTC Titan II comes with a 1.5GHz (Qualcomm S2) processor. It's only single core, so won't be giving high end Android or iOS phones any scares, but it should push the Windows Phone OS along perfectly well.
Again, we know this to be the case because we've seen it before.

Yes. Yes you have. The HTC Titan 2 is identical to the HTC Titan in many ways. Yep, that's the Titan we only reviewed back in mid-October 2011. Everything we've described so far is identical, while the phone also looks very similar indeed.

16-megapixel camera
Chief among the HTC Titan II's differences (in Europe at least) to the Titan is its impressive-looking 16-megapixel camera. Yep, that's one of the meatiest smartphone snappers we've ever seen, with double the MP of its predecessor. Apparently, HTC has had to do a spot of software tweaking just to get such a unit to work with Windows Phone, so let's hope it was worth the effort.
As we've come to learn from digital cameras - particularly those that have been squished into a smartphone - megapixel count actually means very little in terms of picture quality. More important is the lens and image sensor, and on the former point you can expect a f/2.6 28mm example.

There's a very strong case for the Samsung Galaxy S 2 being the best handset of the year. Launched in the UK on May 1st as a top-of-the line handset, it's been there or thereabouts ever since. Join us as we look back on its year.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 rumours

Back in February we were getting all giddy with excitement at the prospect of seeing the follow-up to the excellent Samsung Galaxy S at Mobile World Congress. Samsung had well and truly whet our appetites with a stylish teaser campaign, and early rumours suggested a dual-core monster of a phone.

Not all of the rumoured specs were true - there was no NFC in the initial batch of devices, and the processor was even better than we expected - but we knew we were in for a treat at any rate.

Tegra 2 transplant

Confusion over the Samsung Galaxy S 2's processor continued in the lead up to launch. This was clarified when it emerged Samsung was struggling to meet the production demands on its blisteringly fast custom dual-core processor. The Exynos chip was hot, but they just couldn't make enough of them.

A work-around solution soon emerged. In certain territories, the Samsung Galaxy S 2's Exynos chip would be swapped out for a more standard Tegra 2 chip. This had the advantage of greater app developer support, but it just wasn't quite as powerful - particularly in the graphics department.

Samsung Galaxy S 2 revealed

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 was revealed at the Mobile World Congress show on February 13. It wouldn't be launched in the UK until May 1st - but it was well worth the wait. We found the it to be "an astonishingly thin, astonishingly fast smartphone", and it instantly became our favourite Android phone of the moment.

The Galaxy S 2 really knocked us (and its competitors) for six with a mixture of ultra-lightness, superior power, unbelievable thinness and one of the finest mobile displays we'd ever seen. In many ways, its Super AMOLED Plus display remains unrivaled.

White model released

After four months on sale, there was still little to touch the Samsung Galaxy S 2 as an all-round package. Samsung decided to make its pride and joy even more attractive in that time-honoured way - releasing a white version.

The white Samsung Galaxy S 2 was no different to the black version, other than its snazzy paint job. We also pointed out at around this time how cheap the Samsung Galaxy S 2 had become. By September you could get the phone for free on £36 a month contracts - and this has since dropped further to £30 a month.

Fresh rumours have emerged suggesting that Apple will produce a smaller version of the iPad in 2012. Step this way for more information.

The suggestion that Apple might be formulating a so-called iPad Mini isn't a new one - as far back as April 2010 we were reporting on suggestions that a smaller addition to Apple's tablet range was in the works.

Now, DigiTimes has added to the mix of conjecture and hearsay. The Taiwanese tech gossip-monger has asserted that "Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to the fourth quarter of 2012″, citing its (occasionally) trusty "sources in the supply chain".

This will be in addition to the iPad 3, which is set to launch in the first quarter of 2012 with a similar form factor to the iPad and iPad 2.

According to the report, Apple is producing such an intermediate device "in order to cope with increasing market competition including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors".

Apple isn't known for releasing products on such reactionary grounds, but then it hasn't been under the kind of competitive pressure currently offered by Android and Amazon for quite some time now.
