There will be some fee attached to the coupon, but there's no word on what that's going to be (so far). The upgrade offer will start on or around June 2, 2012 -- right around the time Microsoft delivers the Release Preview (Release Candidate) of Windows 8 -- and last through January, 2013. I think Windows 8 is doomed to failed on the desktop. But, much as I dislike Windows 8 and its Metro interface, I thought it had a chance on the business Best iPhone 4 Cases . Microsoft won't be supporting AD on Windows 8 on ARM (WOA).

What I did think, though, was that Microsoft would have a decent chance at getting IT departments into buying them for their users to avoid the "bring your own device (BYOD)" management headaches that comes with users bringing in their own tablets. I may not like what I've seen on Windows 8, but I could see Windows RT tablets with AD integration making good solid business sense for companies that were deeply invested in Windows.

Thousands of SXSW attendees with lots of social-media moxie but little to no security savvy were easy prey for a hacker like Kitchen. The interface he was using on his Galaxy Note smartphone showed a long list of BlackBerrys, iPhones, Androids, and laptops that thought they were connecting to the hotel or Starbucks Wi-Fi (which uses the name "attwifi"), but were actually being tricked by Kitchen's WiFi Pineapple. "Nobody has any sense of security here," he said, scrolling through the list of devices connected to his Wi-Fi router.

If he wanted to, Kitchen could do something malicious, like a man-in-the-middle attack, and steal passwords and other data from unwitting victims. But his mission is to educate people by demonstrating what the risks are and not attack them. So his device was programmed to replace every Web page on the Internet with a Nyan Cat.

"When the device is kicked off it tries to get back on the network, and since I'm in closer proximity than the Wi-Fi router, it picks up my signal instead," Kitchen said. "In the demo I had half the audience connected to my Wi-Fi router."

Basically, his WiFi Pineapple is what is known as a "Hot-spot Honeypot" that attracts the devices looking to connect to Wi-Fi. The devices send out probe requests when the user turns the Wi-Fi on or turns on the device, and then Wi-Fi is automatically enabled. The messages are asking for a connection from a list of Wi-Fi networks that the device has remembered. Kitchen's router pretends to be the Wi-Fi network the user's device is seeking. This only works with an open Wi-Fi network, not one that's protected with the WPA encryption standard, which requires users to type in a password to connect. "It's an inherent flaw in the trust model of open Wi-Fi," he said.

Prototype software on his laptop was doing something similar with Wi-Fi connections, only the messages it was sending were de-authorization packets to interfere with the current Wi-Fi connection by saying the security equivalent of "this is not the Wi-Fi router you are looking for."
The problem is that the devices are set to automatically remember networks they've connected to in the past and it reconnects automatically when in range. "The security is in the way vendors implement it and all they care about is network name," Kitchen said. The solution would be requiring a challenge and response protocol for authentication and encryption, he said. But the mobile device makers haven't implemented that, probably because users would need to make a few more clicks to get on the network, he added.Best iPad 3 case

An alleged leaked inventory shows the name iPad HD, hinting Apple could choose the moniker to big up the device's retina display. It would make sense from a marketing point of view. And marketing isn't exactly Apple's weak point.

Despite Apple being legendarily closely guarded about its product name and specs prior to launch, some manufacturers are tipped off just before the big day. With the next iPad event just five days away, Apple may have warned case makers so they can have products ready for launch.

The retina display is thought to be the big selling point of the new iPad. With a purported resolution of 2,048x1,536-pixels, it promises to boast ridiculously bright colours and amazingly sharp edges.

A couple of weeks ago someone got their hands on the purported retina display, got the microscope out, and zoomed right in, showing it should have twice the resolution of the current iPad 2. Sadly there was no way to power it up to see for ourselves, but give it a few days and we'll know either way.

The screen is thought to be the same 9.7 inches as the current iPad, so the dimensions of the device shouldn't change much. But Apple might have a smaller version waiting in the wings -- yesterday news leaked of a 7.85-inch iPad due in the autumn.

This backs up previous rumours that it'll have the same resolution as the iPad 2, so apps will work without developers having to tweak them. Apple may also slash the price of the iPad 2 next week to cut off competition from the Amazon Kindle Fire. We could also see an updated Apple TV. Just not the one we all want to see, unfortunately. Fighting Proview in Shanghai Showdown, Apple highlights iPad’s benefits to China’s economy

An important update as a Shanghai court hearing this morning confronted Shenzhen, China-based LCD display maker Proview and Apple of California, the maker of the widely popular iPad tablet. The high-profile hearing drew more than a hundred reporters. As you know, Proview is dreaming of a multi-billion dollar settlement for rights to the iPad name in China where Apple pushes aggressively with claims it acquired the iPad trademark in 2009 from Proview’s Taiwanese affiliate for about $55,000. Associated Pre this morningdescribed a heated exchange between cash-strapped Proview, which recently filed for bankruptcy, and the Silicon Valley giant. If enforced, the ban could easily disrupt worldwide iPad availability, because the world’s largest contract manufacturer Foxconn at its plants in the Chinese province of Shenzhen manufactures the tablet. Worse, it could disrupt a future iPad 3 launch allegedly scheduled for March 7 unveiling. So yeah, it is all about money.

Proview representatives presented as court evidence the company’s 2000 iMac-lookalike named IPAD (pictured on the right). The lawyers came down with all guns blazing on Apple, and said:"Apple has no right to sell iPads under that name.” The company’s CEO told reporters "both sides have willingness to negotiate,” and asserted, "both sides will submit their plans before the talks,”because an out-of-court settlement "is quite possible.”Burberry iPhone 4 Cases|Burberry iPhone 4S Cases

To this, Apple responded:

They have no market, no sales, no customers. They have nothing. The iPad is so popular that it is in short supply. We have to consider the public good.

Reuters followed up with another quote attributed to Apple’s legal team:

Apple has huge sales in China. Its fans line up to buy Apple products. The ban, if executed, would not only hurt Apple sales but it would also hurt China’s national interest.

Explaining Proview has not sold or marketed its IPAD computer system in years while Apple only began selling the iPad tablet in 2010, the company said the fact essentially invalidates Proview’s trademark. Lawyers for Proview cried foul, and claimed any public good achieved through the creation of iPad manufacturing jobs in China and tax revenues should not be confused with trademark infringement:

Whether people will go hungry because you can’t sell iPads in China is not the issue. The court must rule according to the law. Do you absolutely have to sell the product? Can’t you sell it using a different name?

The ruling in this case may not be reached for weeks, if not months. Apple’s legal woes with Proview began last July when a Hong Kong court ruling revealed that Apple founded a United Kingdom-based company to snatch rights to the iPad trademark in various markets without revealing it was the purchaser. Apple maintained it purchased the worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries in 2009 from Proview’s Taiwanese affiliate for about $55,000, including rights to market the iPad in China. When Proview sued, Apple accused them of not honoring that agreement. A Hong Kong court sided with us in this matter, Apple said. However, legal systems in Hong Kong and Mainland China are not very much alike, so the Hong Kong ruling is not helping Apple much in its broader legal dealings with Proview, which is pushing aggressively for a country-wide ban on iPad imports and exports in China in the hopes that Apple would settle.
