Kicking the New Year off in style, Apple had a great end to 2011, as not only did its iOS operating system regain its top spot as America's number one smartphone OS, Apple's global smartphone shipments grew to fend off strong competition from big name rivals such as Samsung and Nokia in Q4 2011.
While Apple shipped 17 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2011, this number exploded to a whopping 37 million shipments in the last three months of the year, all thanks to the huge demand for the gorgeous Apple iPhone 4S and the release of Apple's latest smartphone operating system, Apple iOS 5.

Giving Apple a staggering growth of 117 per cent between Q3 and Q4 2011, these strong stats put Apple on top for the final quarter of the year, beating Samsung's impressive 36 million smartphone shipments and Nokia's none too shoddy 20 million shipments, thanks to the success of its Nokia Lumia range.
However, in terms of overall smartphone shipments for the whole of 2011, Samsung is still the top dog. While Apple managed an excellent 93 million smartphone shipments in 2011 and Nokia was able to ship 77 million units, Samsung's shipments grew by a massive 278 per cent from 25 to 95 million.
That's not to say Apple and Samsung has the market to themselves, though, as when you step outside the smartphone market and look at overall global mobile phone shipments, it's Nokia that continues to lead the way, posting the kind of impressive figures that effortlessly put all its rivals in the shade.
Shipping a fantastic 417.1 million phones globally in 2011, Nokia ended the year with 26.9 per cent market share. In contrast, Samsung shipped 327.4 million units over the course of the year to secure 21.1 per cent market share and Apple shipped 93 million units, for a 6 per cent market share in 2011.
With these three big names fighting for dominance and plenty of new kit on the way in 2012, it's anyone's guess how the figures will stack up this time next year. But if there's one thing that's certain, it's that we'll have plenty of great new Apple, Nokia and Samsung handsets to play with along the way.Designer iPhone 4 cases
